Forest Awakening & The Time Limit
What wakes the forest, how the countdown works, and how to extract before the surge.
Every map has a timer
Each expedition zone runs a hidden countdown. When it expires, the forest 'awakens' — enemy spawns escalate sharply and creatures become far more aggressive. New players often don't realise this clock exists until they're overwhelmed.
What accelerates the countdown
The forest responds to disturbance. These actions burn the clock faster:
- Firing firearms, especially arquebuses — the loudest possible noise
- Breaking branches while moving through dense undergrowth
- Blowing the ox-wagon horn (it locates the cart, but at a cost)
- Sustained combat near the map's deeper zones
When the countdown ends
Once the forest fully awakens, a wave of enemies floods your position. This is not a gradual escalation — it is a spike. Teams caught far from the wagon rarely survive it. Plan your extraction route before you approach the time limit, not when you hear the surge begin.
Play quietly, plan early
- Use melee over firearms wherever possible to keep noise low
- Prioritise objective items over thorough looting on tighter contracts
- Mark the wagon location early in the expedition so the team knows the exit
- Reserve the horn as a last resort — it works, but it costs you time
Note: this mechanic changes at full release
The hard countdown timer is being replaced with a wave-based spawning system in the July 15 full release. The forest will still pressure you over time — it just won't cut to a hard stop. Expect this guide to update after launch.
